The Gospel of John #9
/By Robert Guenther
We want to utilize this space to complete the article that we started last month taken from a book entitled "Search to See" by Alvin Johnson with the title: "Life in John's Gospel".
6:53 - Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you , except you eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink His blood, ye have no life in you.
6:54 - Whosoever eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.
6:63 - It is the Spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
6:68 - Then Simon Peter answered Him, Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life.
8:12 - The spake Jesus again unto them, saying, "I am the light of the world: he that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life."
10:10 - The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
10:28 - And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
12:25 - He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.
12:50 - And I know that His commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak."
14:6 - Jesus saith unto him, " I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
17:2 - As Thou hast given Him power over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as Thou hast given him.
17:3 - And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, Whom Thou hast sent.
20:31 - But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus in the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through His name.
I never realized the number of times that "life" was mentioned in the Book of John, before I read this article.
I must admit that I had an understanding from reading the verses in John 20:30, 31 that God had a reason for performing signs and miracles and that the overall purpose was to give life to those who would believe.
When I saw the sheer repetition of life and really eternal life being offered at no cost to mankind, this fact added even more weight to what I had already believed.
And finally, I am even more convinced that the Book of John should be used to bring others to the Truth concerning how they might obtain "Life through His name"
