Things Most Surely Believed As to the Scriptures
/By Joseph L. Watkins
In Hebrews 10:7 we find a quotation of Psalms 40:7, “...IN THE VOLUME OF THE BOOK IT IS WRITTEN...” Many years ago, I faced up to this very interesting and important question; Is it reasonable to think that God Almighty, the Creator of all the universe, would write a book? Now I suppose to the reasoning of the natural mind, even the very question seems far out, maybe even a bit silly, perhaps. Why would “the Creator of all” need to, or want to, author a book? Let me ask this: What is a book, or as the Hebrew or Greek would put it, a scroll? It is a convenient mode of arranging words together in a permanent form. Words are vehicles with a capacity to convey thought and mental impressions from one mind unto another. The Lord God, our Creator, has much to say unto His creature, information that is most vital to the very preservation of His creation. Vital truth that must become a part of the storehouse of knowledge and understanding of this creature, in order that the Creator’s very purpose in creation is not totally lost.
Now some might argue saying, Why did not this all-wise Creator just simply pre-program into the brain, or mind, of this creature, all this knowledge and truth that is so vital. Like the instinctive character of the lower souls, or maybe something similar to the pre-programming of a computer or our modern day robots. Well, then wold not that be just what He would have on His hands, a very large assortment of robot-like creatures, pre-programmed, predetermined, or predestinated clones, at least in a mental state.
This is far from what He had in view when He created the man Adam. Our Maker designed us to be creatures that could, and would, respond to Him through the divinely given principle of faith. Yes, living, social beings that were to be personally and totally responsible creatures.
What has all this to do with our question: Is it reasonable that God should write a book? Well, just this: Romans 10:17 sets before us a very vital truth, “FAITH COMETH BY HEARING THE WORD OF GOD.” Yes, faith is produced in the mind and spirit, of a human soul upon hearing and believing what’s heard (hearing implies believing what’s heard) the truths that are conveyable to us through the words that make up His book. Words that our Creator has personally inspired. “And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works” (2 Tim. 3:15-17).
So you see, it is reasonable that an all-wise Creator would give to His creatures His vital truths in His book.
