The Gospel of John #60

by Robert E. Guenther
Continuing our review of the Gospel of John, Chapter 10:33-42. As he speaks to the Jews in the next few verses, the Lord will explain how our God can be both man and God. He is not committing blasphemy by stating that he is both.
Vs John 10:33 “The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.. The justification the Jews were using to have the Lord stoned was taken from Lev 24:16. “And he that blasphemeth the name of the LORD, he shall surely be put to death, and all the congregation shall certainly stone him: ...” The Lord answers them in the next verse by informing them that they are liken to the gods.
Vs John 10:34 “Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?” Read Gen. 3:5. “For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.” The truth is that the claim made by the Lord that he is truly man and God at one and at the same time, to do the work He was sent to do, that being to die and be resurrected for their sins.
Vs John 10:35 “If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken;” So we have established that He did call them “gods”, so there is no question stated but rather a fact.
Vs John 10:36 “Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God?” He has won the argument that he can be truly “man” and “God” at the same time.
Vs John 10:37 “If I do not the works of the Father, believe me not.” But just in case you do not believe that He can be both persons, test out the works that He does.
Vs John 10:38 “But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him.” The sign gifts that the Lord promised He would do when He revealed Himself to Israel are the very works that He accomplished. Read Mark 16:17 - 20.
Vs John 10:39 “Therefore they sought again to take him: but he escaped out of their hand,” Another opportunity for them to believe is wasted due to unbelief on their part.
Vs John 10:40 And went away again beyond Jordan into the place where John at first baptized; and there he abode.” Our Lord moves on to give others an opportunity to believe and many did.
Vs John 10:41 “And many resorted unto him, and said, John did no miracle: but all things that John spake of this man were true.” Believe the record and receive Life through His name.
Vs John 10:42 “And many believed on him there.” Are you one of the many?                                                                                                                                                     …to be continued.
